TOXICITY REVIEW FOR DIMETHYL PHTHALATE (DMP, CASRN 131-11-3) Contract No. CPSC-D-06-0006 Task Order 012 Prepared by: Versar Inc. 6850 Versar Center Springfield,
Dimethyl phthalate is a colorless, transparent, slightly yellow oily plasticizer that is soluble with various cellulose resins, rubber, and vinyl resins, and has good film-forming, adhesive, and waterproof properties. Can be used in the production of cellulose acetate films, varnish, transparent paper, and molding powder.
- What is dimethyl phthalate (DMP)?
- Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) belongs to a group of compounds named phthalate esters, which are produced by esterification of phthalic acid with methanol. It is classified as a low molecular-weight (LMW) phthalate, containing a single carbon ester side-chain (HSDB 2009; Otero et al. 2015).
- Is DMP phthalate toxic?
- Due to the toxicological properties of DMP (low acute toxicity, low skin and eye irritation, low skin sensitizing potential), the occurrence, among consumers, of adverse acute effects resulting from use of cosmetics containing this phthalate is relatively low.
- Which phthalate is most commonly used in industry?
- The most commonly used in industry include dibutyl phthalate (DBP), di-2-Ethyl Hexyl Phthalate (DEHP), and dimethyl phthalate (DMP), which are readily freed into the environment (Buoso et al., 2020).
- Is dimethyl phthalate a potent male rat reproductive tract toxicant?
- The results provide supportive evidence that gestational exposure to dimethyl phthalate isnot a potent male rat reproductive tract toxicant like other phthalate esters, such as DBP and DEHP.
- What phthalates are used in cosmetics?
- Manufacturers use low-MW phthalates such as DMP, di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), and DBP as solvents in personal care products (perfumes, lotions, cosmetics), insecticides, lacquers, and in coatings including those used to provide timed releases in some pharmaceuticals. They are also used in PVC (Heudorf et al., 2007). Figure 44.1.
- Does an anaerobic fixed film fixed bed reactor remove dimethyl phthalate (DMP)?
- An anaerobic fixed film fixed bed reactor (AnFFFBR) removed 92.5% of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) (Ahmadi et al., 2017). This study also reported that only mono-methyl phthalate and phthalic acid were DMP’s primary by-products since removing side chains of DMP is the only biodegradation pathway.
