This paper summarizes current literature on the migration of monomeric and polymeric PVC plasticizers from medical materials, food packaging, and toys. Especially highlighted is macromolecular engineering as a tool to increase the plasticizing efficiency and migration resistance for polymeric plasticizers. The effect of branching, molecular weight, end-group
- What is the cheapest PVC plasticizer?
- Normally, DOP tends to be the cheapest PVC plasticizer, mainly due to the economies of scale achieved by this material, which means that its offer is greater than DOTP. In Plastisol, DOP is preferred because it does not generate so many “pin holes” defects because it doesn’t affect viscosity, allowing volatile substances to leave the paste.
- What are the different types of plasticizer models?
- These models include the gel, lubricity, and free volume theories; kinetic theories; and mathematical models which predict on the basis of plasticizer structure how much a plasticizer will lower the polymer glass transition in a flexible PVC compound.
- Can plasticizer migration be prevented?
- When the surfaces of flexible PVC sheets were similarly modified, we found that plasticizer migration could be prevented completely, as it was in PVC tubes. How-ever, modification led to a decrease in the stress (about 8 per cent) and strain (about 28 per cent) at the breaking point for PVC sheets.
- Where can plasticizers be used?
- The plasticizer can migrate from PVC-based devices and storage bags into physiological fluids, however, and has been detected in storage media such as blood, plasma, serum, drug solutions and fatty foods 2, 3, 4, as well as in the bodies of patients undergoing haemodialysis and transfusion 5.
- Does plasticization result from interactions between plasticizer and polymer?
- Since plasticization results from interactions between plasticizer and polymer, methods which have been used to study either the strength or the permanence (or both) of those interactions are also briefly discussed.
- What tools are used to study plasticizer-PVC interactions?
- Tools which have often been used to study plasticizer-PVC interactions include infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, compression and humid-aging tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, torque rheometer tests, plasticizer-resin clear point temperature measurements, plastisol gelation/fusion by hot stage measurements, and others.
