  • Does Indonesia export green goods & plastic substitutes?
  • A recent World Bank report shows that Indonesia has untapped potential in exports of green goods and plastic substitutes. Indonesia’s imports of environmental goods (EGs) – such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and air filters – have been at par with global and regional averages, but its exports of EGs have lagged behind (Figure 1).
  • Why is Indonesia a green port?
  • Indonesia is an archipelagic nation with over 17,000 islands. The country’s nearly 350 ports consequently play a crucial role in this Southeast Asian economy. Indonesia has embraced the concept of a “green port” to enhance both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • Do Indonesians want more environmentally friendly products?
  • According to a survey in Indonesia in 2022, more than half of the respondents stated that they would maintain their current budget to get a more environmentally friendly product. Meanwhile, seven percent of respondents said that they would decrease their intention to pay a higher price for such products.

  • To enhance its green transformation, Indonesia could adopt the following trade policies: Reduce remaining tariffs on imports of environmental goods and plastic substitutes, including through plurilateral trade agreements.
  • How would a tariff reduction affect Indonesia's green goods trade?
  • Tariff reductions on green goods traded either regionally or under the World Trade Organization’s Environmental Goods Agreement would result in important “trade creation” effects. This could boost Indonesia’s green goods exports and facilitate firm entry into EG markets (Figure 4).

  • To enhance its green economic landscape, Indonesia could consider the following priority actions: Developing comprehensive green economy policies and regulations that help promote sustainable practices across all sectors, as well as incorporate sustainability into national and regional development plans.
