The damage is caused "plasticizer migration". The plasticizers in the plastic chemically denatured the finish on your table. Abrading the table can help and in rare cases fix
Perhaps the legs of the desk would be suitable for testing if it's a lacquer finish. If so, spraying would re-constitute the finish as mentioned. But that brings its own problems.

Therefore, migration of plasticizer can be inhibited by the three following ways: (1) using plasticizers with higher molecular weight and hyperbranched degree, (2) increasing the

The migration rate for DEHP, a widely used phthalate in PVC, was 0.0023, 0.0064, 0.0087, and 0.0134 μg/cm 2 /h at 0, 1, 2, 4 mg/cm 2 sebum mass. Therefore, higher

From the weight loss trends reported in Figure 3, two migration regimes can be observed: a first linear regime where a high quantity of plasticizer is lost in a short time and a
Plasticizer migration towards the interface caused an increase of dynamic friction compared to that of the reference rigid PVC.Vickers microhardness hVickers values of rigid PVC sheets decreased
- Can a plasticizer migrate out of a surface?
- Coating the surface – The plasticizer cannot migrate out of the surface if there is a coating that will not allow it to pass through. Now that you know about plasticizer migration and why it causes problems, it’s time to decide whether it can affect your application.
- What is plasticizer migration?
- Plasticizer migration is the unwanted net movement of a plasticizer component out of a compound (like an adhesive or plastic). It can occur through gas volatilisation, liquid extraction, or solid migration. Collectively these are known as plasticizer migration. Plasticizers are often put into materials to make them more flexible or malleable.
- Do plasticizers migrate inversely to their molecular weight?
- The migration of plasticizers is inversely proportional to their molecular weight ( Marcilla et al., 2008; Marcilla et al., 2004 ). The present study also found negative correlations between the migration and molar mass of PAEs (see Fig. S8).
- Does plasticizer migrate from PVC?
- Kim et al. also found a similar trends for migration of plasticizer from PVC articles ( Kim et al., 2022 ). Furthermore, the migration of low-molecular-weight PAEs (including DMP, DEP, DBP, and DIBP, with up to four carbon atoms in the chain) was significantly higher than that of high-molecular-weight PAEs (those with more than four carbon atoms).
- Do plasticizers migrate from MPVC to poly(dimethylsiloxane) via skin?
- There is a potential risk of exposure to PAEs from household PVC articles via skin. In the present study, the migration of plasticizers from modeled and commercial polyvinyl chloride (mPVC and cPVC, respectively) to poly (dimethylsiloxane) via artificial sebum was assessed to mimic the dermal migration of plasticizers.
- Do plasticizers have migration resistance?
- Therefore, any emerging plasticizer that succeeds in this arena of inten-sive competition is required to demonstrate excellent migration resistance, a crucial indicator governing how the resulting PVC coating holds up against long-term service and low environmental impact [9, 10].
