- What is ligniox innovation action?
- The aim of the LigniOx Innovation Action is to demonstrate the techno-economic viability of alkali-O2 oxidation technology (LigniOx) for the conversion of variable lignin-rich side-streams into versatile dispersants, and especially high-performance concrete and mortar plasticizers.
- What is ligniox process?
- This LigniOx process uses molecular oxygen as environmentally friendly and low-cost oxidizing agent and introduces acidic groups into the lignin polymer, converting it into a water-soluble polyelectrolyte.
- Can lignin be used as a plasticizer for concrete?
- When using the admixtures, it was observed an increase in the slump measurements of 75% for kraft lignosulfonate, and 95% for heat-treated lignosulfonate and Muraplast FK830 at the specified concentrations. These results corroborate with the premise of this research, indicating that lignin can be modified into a plasticizer for concrete.
- Can lignosulfonate be used in concrete plasticizers?
- This suggests that thermal treatment may not be a requisite process when considering the utilization of lignosulfonate as a component in concrete plasticizers, as it did not yield notable improvements. Muraplast FK 830 was found to increase the axial compression strength of no-admixture concrete by approximately 26% by the age of 7 days.
- What is a lignin biorefinery?
- Kraft lignin is generated as a side stream of the kraft pulping process that is normally burnt to produce steam and energy. However, given its high availability as the second most abundant biopolymer, a lignin biorefinery is a promising approach to reach a sustainable bioeconomy.
- Can alkali oxidation convert lignins to versatile dispersants?
- A simple and cost-efficient alkali oxidation process for conversion of technical as well as biorefinery lignins to versatile dispersants, particularly high performance concrete superplasticizers, has been developed by VTT.
