This dope also tends to tight the paper or silk much more than butyrate so you have to plasticize it with a few drops of castor oil. Good luck and enjoy the dope's smell!!

Butysolve reminded me of why Randolph dope finishes are still in use 100+ years later. The PA-12 was recovered 25 years ago, and I recently noticed hairline cracks in the dope where it passed over an underlying hardpoint.

Does butyrate dope stick to fabric?
Butyrate dope sticks to fabric very well but doesn’t work well on metal or fiberglass. If it is sprayed onto primed aluminum or fiberglass, there’s a good chance it will peel off in a very short time. Specifically formulated for use on Ceconite synthetic fabric. This product has additional plasticizer added to help prevent unnecessary tautening.

If you're near any airfields where they service aircraft then you should be able to buy the butyrate thinner from an aircraft outlet. Or maybe one of the service shops would sell you a quart or liter to get by. Here in Colombia, the only dope available is nitrate dope.
