- Wood–plastic composite (WPC) is a composite material made of plastic as a matrix and wood as filler (Gardner et al., 2015). Like other composite materials, the constituent materials are preserved in their original forms and are incorporated to obtain a new composite material with reasonable mechanical and physical properties and low cost.
- What materials are used in WPC?
- Different types of plastics such as HDPE, LDPE, PVC, PP, PVC, ABS, PS, PBS, PC, PES, PET, PF, PHBV, PLA, PPC, and UPE have been used as matrix in WPCs. Both virgin and waste plastic are used to fabricate WPCs. Wood fibers and other natural fibers such as wheat and jute fibers are used as reinforcement materials.
- Which polymeric materials are used in WPC fabrication?
- Various polymeric materials (thermosets, thermoplastics) have been used in WPC fabrication (Gardner et al., 2015). The processing temperature of these polymers should not exceed 200 °C to protect wood fibers from disintegration of cellulose chains.

- The first WPC produced was a composite made of phenol-formaldehyde resin and wood flour for use as gearshift knob in automobile . Wood generally degrades at 220°C and thus it is important that the polymer used does not thermally degrade the wood component during thermomechanical processes.

- The resin used in WPC has two main categories; thermoplastic and thermosetting. In manufacturing of thermoset-based WPC curing agents are used to produce finished parts which cannot be reformed and can be only subjected to finishing processes. The most common used thermosets are epoxies, amino and phenolic resins, polyamides, and polyurethanes.
